Usage Guide
Here are some helpful hints on using the calculator:
- Hours Worked Per Week: Typical full-time work is counted at 40 hours per week. Please modify this as would be appropriate for your situation.
- Weeks Worked Per Year: There are 52 weeks in a year, so I recommend leaving that field to 52. If however you work fewer than that, or you want to deduct vacation weeks, then you can use another figure like 50.
In addition to showing the hourly wage, for your convenience, this calculator also shows the wages on a weekly and biweekly basis. The biweekly basis is useful as many people are paid every 2 weeks, and this will help you to figure out how much your paycheque will be (before taxes) in advance.
How to calculate hourly rate from salary?
The easiest way to convert an annual salary to an hourly wage is shown below:
Hourly wage = Annual Salary ÷ 2080
Let’s take an example: Wondering what $50,000 a year is in hourly terms? Take your annual salary of $50,000 and divide by 2,080 hours per year. This works out to $24.04 per hour.
Please use the calculator above to help you with other calculations.
Why calculate your hourly salary?
Most job openings advertised will typically inform you of your yearly salary. While that’s helpful year on year, it’s often much more efficient to work with per-hour numbers.
For example, knowing your rate per hour can help you plan for overtime if you need to, and can help you compare your new wage to your previous rates.
You’ll find that hourly rates are more common in retail and public-facing roles. However, it’s worth knowing that salaried roles and those paid hourly can vary in terms of how you receive money, too.
The calculator on this page simply helps you break down that big number into gross pay per day. It’s helpful for budgeting if you want to work more hours for Christmas, for example, or if you need to take sick days, you’ll know how much money you could potentially lose.
Is $40,000 a year a good hourly wage?
By a simple calculation, $40,000 a year is roughly $19.23 an hour. To get this calculation, we divide the $40,000 total by 2,080 working hours, across 52 weeks of the year, and based on a 40-hour working week.
However, this rate can decrease – for example, what if you need to take time off sick or take vacation time?
Statistics show that the highest average minimum wage in the US is around $16.50 per hour, in the District of Columbia. Therefore, $40,000 a year certainly seems to be an above average wage even at an hourly rate!
Take a look at our guide to earning $100k in the US, however, if you’re unsure about how far that money will stretch.
Before You Go…
This calculator helps you convert your hourly rate if you already know how much you are earning in yearly terms. But what if you want to go the other way?
What if you already know your hourly rate but want to figure out what it means in annual terms? The hourly to annual salary calculator will help you do just that!
Just to make it more fun, I also built a calculator that helps you go from hourly to monthly salary calculator. This could be useful if you are trying to figure out if you are earning enough to cover a mortgage payment or meet the 3x monthly rent rule.
