If you’re paying for various services through direct debit each month, there’s likely to be lots of different names and brands popping up on your bank statement. But what if you spot something you don’t recognise or that you’re worried you didn’t sign up for? For example, what does BG Services on a bank statement mean?
BG Services stands for British Gas Services. If you see this charge on your bank statements or summary, it’s because you’re paying for monthly cover. Keep reading, and I’ll show you how to manage this payment and what to do if you want to stop it from appearing on your bank statements.
What is BG Services, and why does it appear on my bank statement?
BG Services is the name that appears under charges for British Gas’ HomeCare service. It’s a monthly payment that insures your electricity supply, boiler, plumbing and drainage.
British Gas HomeCare also covers you for property and contents to some extent. You can also apply for cover to protect your heating if it breaks down, or on certain appliances – such as washing machines and refrigerators – if you’re left without them in a pinch.
For many British Gas customers, HomeCare provides reliable cover at a low cost each month and saves them from having to find insurance through multiple suppliers elsewhere.
The price you’ll pay for British Gas HomeCare can vary depending on your desired cover. You may pay as little as £10 per month or as much as £50 per month. It’s worth checking your coverage and contacting British Gas directly if you’re worried.
I didn’t sign up for BG Services – what should I do?
If you don’t remember signing up for BG Services, it may be that the service was activated via your account as a trial, and wasn’t cancelled after this period.
If you took out a trial with British Gas HomeCare, you’ll need to have supplied bank details for future Direct Debit payments to transfer through.
Unfortunately, you may be liable to pay for the service if you’re getting charges after a trial period. Regardless, if you no longer want to pay for HomeCare, you’ll need to contact British Gas customer care directly.
British Gas HomeCare operates on a contract term. The amount you pay, the cover you get, and how long for, may depend on the package you choose, and where you live. You may also have to pay a cancellation fee if you terminate your contract early.
If you feel you were mis-sold British Gas HomeCare and don’t accept the charges applied to your account, it’s always wise to speak to British Gas’ customer care team in the first instance. The team may be able to find a resolution to your complaint without escalating it further.
Make sure to check out British Gas’ online help directory, too, in case you can find an answer to your query online.
The same applies if you believe someone set up a Direct Debit on your account without your knowledge or agreement. In either case, speaking directly to your bank’s customer care team is also wise. You may need to cancel Direct Debit instructions through your bank to prevent British Gas from taking any further payments.
Before signing up for any services or packages with British Gas, always read the terms and conditions carefully.
How do I cancel British Gas HomeCare?
If you don’t want to continue paying for British Gas HomeCare, you’ll need to speak to the cancellations team directly on their contact number at 0333 200 8899. This team is available to call Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm (GMT).
You can manage your HomeCare account and other services through your online login provided by British Gas. However, the supplier requests that you call their team directly if you wish to cancel your cover outright.
This works in your favour, as the cancellation team can explain any cancellation charges that may apply and will answer any questions you may have along the way.
As always, cancel your British Gas Direct Debit instruction with your bank, too. This should prevent the supplier from requesting any further money from you after you shut down your account.
Can I get money back from BG Services?
Unless you can prove that BG Services was set up through your bank account erroneously, or there’s no record of you requesting HomeCare, you may not be able to claim money back for charges accrued.
If someone set up a Direct Debit instruction at your bank without your consent, your bank may be able to place some charges under query. However, this will vary from case to case and from bank to bank.
You may also claim money back from BG Services if, for example, you have mitigating circumstances. For example, if you’ve fallen ill, the cancellation team may show some leniency. Unfortunately, there’s no straight answer to this question!
Should I keep BG Services / British Gas HomeCare?
British Gas HomeCare can help protect you from unwanted and unexpected expenses should your home appliances, heating or plumbing break down. Monthly costs may offset your potential charges to get major appliances fixed outright.
Consider whether or not you could feasibly pay for boiler repair or a replacement washing machine at short notice. Would it be more financially viable for you to pay for cover each month?
It’s the same question you must ask yourself when paying for insurance elsewhere. Appliances and home heating can and will wear down or break in the long run. No one’s psychic when it comes to when these big fixtures might cost you dearly – so it might be worth paying for the monthly safety net.
However, the choice is entirely yours! If you’d rather save money on cover each month, it’s easy enough to call British Gas to get BG Services removed from your bank statements in future.
